Youth Zone’s Juneteenth celebration was a whole vibe; a day packed with good music, good food, and even better company. Put together by both youth and staff, the event was all about honoring Juneteenth through creativity, culture, and community.
One of the biggest highlights of the day was a custom studio mix created by Youth Zone participants. The youth spent time in the recording studio producing original beats and curating a mix that reflected the themes of Black freedom, resilience, and pride. The mix played during the event, giving young creators the spotlight they deserved.
The celebration continued with an incredible home-cooked meal made in-house. The youth and staff enjoyed BBQ chicken, mac and cheese, cabbage, hot dogs, cornbread, rice and beans, linguine, fresh fruit salad, and of course, red Kool-Aid!!! The meal brought everyone to the table, creating a sense of unity and comfort that was felt throughout the day.
Laughter filled the room during karaoke and line dances, where youth and staff took turns showing off their moves and singing their hearts out. From the mic to the dance floor, the energy was joyful, relaxed, and full of love. “This was one of the best days I’ve had in the zone in a while,” said one youth. “It felt like a big family cookout.”
Juneteenth at Youth Zone was more than just a celebration, it was a beautiful example of what happens when young people are empowered to lead, create, and build community. It was a day of reflection, expression, and pure fun that reminded everyone in the room of the power of unity.
