Marching with Pride

On Sunday, June 7, members of the 412 Youth Zone community took to the streets for the Pittsburgh Pride Parade. Youth, alumni, and staff marched together in celebration of pride, inclusion, and the supportive community that helps LGBTQIA+ young people feel seen, accepted, and empowered.

Before the parade began, the group transformed an Auberle van with colorful Pride decorations and swag, creating a festive addition to their march. Beginning in the Strip District, the group then made their way through the city, sharing favors with paradegoers and celebrating alongside the crowd before arriving at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side. There, they joined the Pittsburgh Pride Festival, which featured LGBTQIA+ vendors, artists, performers, and community organizations.

This year’s Pittsburgh Pride theme, "Existence is Resistance," served as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where LGBTQIA+ individuals can live authentically, build community, and express themselves freely without fear of judgment. These values are reflected year-round at the 412 Youth Zone through Rainbow, a monthly group that provides a supportive environment for young people to discuss their experiences as LGBTQIA+ individuals, explore topics affecting their communities, and connect with peers who share similar journeys.

For many participants, the parade was both a celebration and a meaningful opportunity to be part of something larger than themselves.

"I really enjoyed being part of the parade," shared Polly. "Walking and seeing everyone’s smiles and excitement was amazing, and the energy was so hype. Having the chance to be a part of that, passing things out and holding the banner while walking with everyone was so special. The group made sure everyone had water and breaks, and a meal after so that everyone was taken care of. It was a great experience."

Another participant reflected on attending their very first Pride Parade.

"Pride was fun. It made my day," they shared. "I went with the 412 Youth Zone and passed out goodies and had a blast. I would do this again. This was my first Pride Parade ever and I enjoyed it. I hope others enjoyed it as well."

The 412 Youth Zone is grateful to everyone who joined us in this year’s celebration. Events like Pittsburgh Pride remind us of the importance of creating communities where all young people feel seen, valued, and empowered to be themselves. We look forward to continuing that work every day through programs like Rainbow and the many supportive relationships that make the Youth Zone a place of belonging for all.
