On January 7th, KidsVoice hosted a presentation at the 412 Youth Zone on Tenants Rights. They detailed what to look for when apartment hunting, what a leasing agreement is, and how the leasing agreement is legally binding. They also discussed the legal protections afforded to tenants within a leasing agreement and outside of the leasing agreement.
Forty-one youth were fully engaged throughout the presentation, asking thoughtful questions and connecting the information directly to their own housing situations. One youth asked if the conditions in her Apartment warranted legal intervention and was able to speak with the presenters afterwards to receive specified aid. Another youth discussed his past experiences as a renter and how they applied the information being presented, even giving practical advice for other youth in similar positions to him.
The presentation proved to be extremely successful, fostering meaningful engagement, peer learning, and empowering youth to take informed action around their housing challenges.
