Road Trips, a classic ingredient to the ideal summer and one of the many ways that we at the 412 Youth Zone celebrate the start of summer. This year we took 21 High school students on a road trip to Niagara Falls. Sleepy eyed, yet excited, we started the day bright and early with a bus departure at 7:30 AM. Participants were quiet and peaceful as they had breakfast, sat with friends and visited during the longer than anticipated bus ride to Niagara Falls. We arrived at the National Park a little after 1 pm. The sun was shining brightly. It was already close to 90 degrees as we took a stroll down to the water’s edge, where we could see Canada across the water. From there, we made our way as a group to the Maid of the Mist. We were given blue poncho’s as we boarded the boat that we put on once we climbed the stairs up to the top deck. The energy of the group was exciting as everyone got as close as they could to the railings on the boat to be able to have a first class view. As the boat departed the dock, we were able to see the stunning geological formations and the falls. Soon we were practically in the falls, the mist initially lightly sprinkling everyone until we were so close that it was like being caught in a warm summer rain. The group was smiling and laughing and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For most it was the highlight of the day.
After our departure from Maid of the Mist, we spilt up into smaller groups. From there we explored the park and youth had the opportunity to get ice cream or pick out a souvenir. We then reconvened at The Hard Rock Café where together we had dinner as one big group. The meal was delicious and hit the spot after a big day of exploring a new place. We got back on the bus, tired and full after a good meal. The ride back was quiet as we rounded out our summer kick-off road trip with a few good movies on the bus home.
