In July, Youth Zone staff and our participants saddled up with our friends at Venture Outdoors for a horseback riding adventure that none of us will soon forget. For many, it was their very first time on a horse, and the mix of excitement and nerves was written all over their faces. From the moment the saddles were cinched, we knew memories (and maybe a few sore muscles) were in the making.
The day was full of laughter, encouragement, and “you got this!” moments as everyone found their balance in the saddle. By the end of the trail, those nervous faces had transformed into confident smiles. One youth joked, “Can I take this horse home? We’ve got the same attitude!” while another shared, “I never thought I’d have a chance to ride a horse.” Hearing words like that reminded us why days like this matter so much.
Of course, the next morning brought the realization that horseback riding is more of a workout than it looks, but even the sore legs couldn’t take away from the sense of accomplishment and joy. Adventures like this remind us just how powerful it can be to step outside our comfort zones, try new things, and share in the kind of experiences that build lasting bonds.
